HC Deb 22 May 1919 vol 116 cc540-1
16. Colonel YATE

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether his attention has been drawn to the circular issued by the Egyptian Association in Great Britain from the address of the Imperial Hotel, Russell Square, London, and signed by H. Y. Awad, the hon. secretary, enclosing extracts from the report of the Giza Provincial Council, supplied by Mr. Tadros J. Makar, who, it is said, was just returned from Egypt, and charging the military authorities in Egypt with gross atrocities; whether he will call on Mr. Awad, Mr. Makar, and all the people mentioned in the Giza Provincial Council's report to substantiate their charges before a judicial Court in Egypt; and, failing their substantiation of the charges in question, will he have them prosecuted and punished?

20. Sir JOHN BUTCHER

asked whether the right hon. Gentleman's attention has been called to a circular purporting to be issued by the Egyptian Association in Great Britain, Imperial Hotel, Russell Square, accusing British troops in Egypt of infamous atrocities, including murder, pillage, and arson; and whether he will take immediate steps to prevent the further publication of this circular and to bring those responsible for its publication to justice?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Colonel Sir Hamar Greenwood)

Steps have been taken to stop the circulation of the leaflet referred to, and the question of prosecuting its authors is under the consideration of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Will the hon. Gentleman consider the stopping of all these atrocity stories from all countries at the present time?

Sir H. GREENWOOD

We will consider the stopping of every publication that transgresses the law.

Sir J. BUTCHER

Can the hon. Gentleman tell us the names of the persons responsible for running this mischievous and pernicious organisation?

Sir H. GREENWOOD

I must have notice of that question.
