HC Deb 20 May 1919 vol 116 c169
22. Major M'KENZIE WOOD

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that there is considerable dissatisfaction among soldiers who are acting as interpreters in Germany, many of whom could have successfully applied for demobilisation; and whether, in view of the fact that their demobilisation is now refused on account of their indispensability, their services will be recognised by the grant of commissions or special rates of pay to all interpreters?

Mr. FORSTER

I am not aware that men who are eligible for demobilisation are being retained as interpreters in Germany, but if my hon. and gallant Friend has any special case in mind, and he will supply full particulars, I will have inquiry made. The question of a grant of extra pay for these interpreters is under consideration.

Major E. WOOD

Will extra pay be granted to officers acting as interpreters?

Mr. FORSTER

I should like to have notice of that.
