HC Deb 15 May 1919 vol 115 c1743
20. Colonel WEDGWOOD

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether public or private instructions have been issued that untried prisoners or prisoners to be tried by court-martial are not to receive visitors?

Mr. SAMUELS

Visits to prisoners awaiting trial by courts-martial or trial by Crimes Act Courts have been suspended and withdrawn for the present. Visits to other untried prisoners have not been suspended.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman why permission to visit prisoners has been abolished in Ireland?

Mr. SAMUELS

Because it was made use of for the purpose of affecting prison discipline there.
