HC Deb 15 May 1919 vol 115 cc1756-7
50. Mr. HIGHAM

asked the Prime Minister what action the Government proposes to take in the event of the omnibus and tramcar fares in London being found to be excessive?

Sir H. GREENWOOD

My right hon. Friend has asked me to reply to this question. There is no power, except by passing new legislation, to compel a reduction of omnibus fares. The question of tramcar fares does not come within the Home Secretary's jurisdiction, but I would refer the hon. Member to the answer on this subject given by the Acting President of the Board of Trade to the hon. Member for Wednesbury on the 12th May.

Mr. HIGHAM

Will the hon. Gentleman introduce legislation to reduce these fares if they are found excessive?

Sir H. GREENWOOD

Any question about legislation must be addressed to the Leader of the House.

Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that companies are ad- vertising that their fares have not been raised, and cannot he take some steps to prevent this fraud being perpetrated?
