HC Deb 15 May 1919 vol 115 cc1764-5
63. Sir J. WALTON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the actual estimated expenditure for 1919–20 is £1,689,000,000 and the estimated revenue £1,001,000,000, showing a deficit of£688,000,000; if the £254,000,000 already received from the sale of assets created by the previous year's expenditure and the further £200,000,000 estimated to be received from the same source in the current year are excluded; and whether these £454,000,000 would be more properly applied if hypothecated for the redemption of short indebtedness?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

No. If I may be permitted to differ from my hon. Friend, I think that the correct figures are given in my Budget Speech.

Sir J. WALTON

I would ask my right hon. Friend whether, in the form in which the balance-sheet has been presented in this House, the real financial situation for 1919–20 is not concealed, and that it might be regarded as a faked balance-sheet?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

No. I agree with the first part of my hon. Friend's question. The correct position is not concealed. It is shown.
