HC Deb 15 May 1919 vol 115 c1771
85. Sir F. HALL

asked the Secretary to the Treasury if, having regard to the practice which has grown up during the War of motor cars attached to Government Departments being used by officials for travelling to and from their homes instead of using the ordinary means of conveyance, and of using such cars for private purposes, the Treasury will arrange for an inquiry as regards all Departments using motor cars with the object of framing Regulations to govern the number of cars, if any, to be allowed, the purposes for which and the persons by whom they may be used, and entirely prohibiting their use for private and semi-private purposes?

Mr. BALDWIN

I would refer my hon. and gallant Friend to the answer given by me to the right hon. Member for the Scottish Universities on the 8th April. I hope that it will be possible in a short time to set up the necessary machinery of inquiry, and to correct any such abuse as may have grown up in the course of the War.
