HC Deb 06 May 1919 vol 115 c734
34. Major CHRISTOPHER LOWTHER

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will state how many persons were executed in the United Kingdom during the year 1918, and how many sentences of death were commuted?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. Shortt)

Seven persons were executed, and eighteen sentences of death were commuted in the United Kingdom during the year 1918.

Mr. PEMBERTON BILLING

Does that include people condemned to death for spying in this country?

Mr. SHORTT

I must ask for notice of that question.
