HC Deb 01 May 1919 vol 115 cc309-10
35. Mr. CLOUGH

asked the Home Secretary whether the Act of George III. is in existence under which judges have the power to award double rent in the case of the non-vacation of a house after the expiration of notice; whether he is aware this Act is still being put in force; and whether, if it is still valid, he will consider its immediate abrogation?

Mr. SHORTT

I would refer the hon. Member to the case of Flannagan v. Shaw reported in to-day's "Times." It appears that the operation of the Act of 1737 is suspended by Section 1 of the Increase of Rent and Mortgage Interest (War Restrictions) Act of 1915.
