HC Deb 19 March 1919 vol 113 cc2067-8
11. Mr. MACMASTER

asked what is the minimum depth and width of the navigable channels separating Denmark and Sweden constituting the ordinary commercial route of merchantmen and ships of war passing into and out of the Baltic Sea?

Mr. LONG

The only navigable channel between Sweden and Denmark is that passing through the "Sound," the least depth in which is 23 ft., which is situated in the "Flint Channel" at the southern end of the Sound. This channel is constantly being dredged, but this depth of 23 ft. in it can only be depended upon in its centre, the line of which is marked by leading lights; the width, therefore, is extremely limited, and probably does not exceed 100 yards.
