35. Mr. F. GREENasked the President of the Local Government Board what guarantee the Government have that the remedies approved by them as substitutes for salvarsan are exactly similar, or even approximately similar, to the remedy as discovered and patented by Ehrlich?
§ Mr. PRATTAll the approved substitutes, except gelyl, are manufactured under licences issued by the Board of Trade for the express purpose of allowing the manufacturers to employ the processes which are used in the manufacture of the original salvarsan and which are protected by patents. The presumption is, therefore, that the drugs produced by these manufacturers are similar to the original article. For the protection of the public all the approved substitutes are tested on behalf of the Medical Research Committee before being placed on sale. I understand that the Salvarsan Committee appointed by the Medical Research Committee have already considered the question, and that they will shortly issue a report in regard to it.
