HC Deb 06 March 1919 vol 113 cc612-3
69. Major ENTWISTLE

asked the First Commissioner of Works when it is proposed to restore to the city of Hull its City Hall; whether he is aware that the compensation paid by the Government for its use is inadequate, and that the Corporation of Hull is losing a sum of about £l,200 per annum, in addition to being deprived of revenue from lettings; whether he is aware that there are other buildings in the city of Hull, such as the assembly rooms, where the work now being carried on could be satisfactorily undertaken; and whether he is aware that the city hall is a building of which the city is justly proud, and that there is considerable resentment in the city at its retention under the above conditions?

Sir A. MOND

I have had this matter under consideration, and although I have been able to surrender the use of the Art Gallery, there is no immediate prospect of making other arrangements in respect of the Hull City Hall. The question of adequate payment to the corporation is under consideration. I am advised that no other accommodation suitable could be found. I am fully aware of the regard with which this hall is held by the citizens of Hull, and appreciate the patriotic co-operation of the corporation in the matter, and I can assure the hon. and gallant Member that as soon as the present occupying Department can dispense with its use, the city Hall will be surrendered.
