HC Deb 03 March 1919 vol 113 cc4-5
61. Major LLOYD-GREAME

asked the Prime Minister whether it is intended to offer to Irish local authorities more favourable financial conditions in respect of the make-up of annual deficits in housing schemes than those offered to local authorities in Great Britain; and, if so, what are the reasons for such preferential treatment?

Mr. BALDWIN (Joint Financial Secretary to the Treasury)

The terms of the English scheme are not suitable to Irish conditions, and I am now in consultation with my right hon. Friend the Chief Secretary as to the best equivalent for Ireland.

Major LLOYD-GREAME

Will there be a preference to Ireland?

Mr. BALDWIN

I used the word "equivalent" to eliminate all idea of preference.

Lieutenant-Colonel GUINNESS

Is it not a fact that under the Housing of the Working Classes Acts of Ireland there is a far larger proportion of the deficit borne by the public than in England?

Mr. BALDWIN

I cannot answer that.
