asked the Secretary of State for War whether our Staff in France knew of the gas attack at Ypres a month before it took place and wired to England for gas-masks; and, if so, what was the reply to this requests

The information received by the General Staff in France was not sufficiently definite to enable any adequate precautionary measures to be taken. No demand was received in the War Office for gas-masks before the attack.
