HC Deb 14 July 1919 vol 118 c22
44. Lieut.-Colonel AUBREY HERBERT

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in view of the fact that massacres of unarmed people by the Greeks took place in 1913–14, and that these massacres, similar to those in Smyrna, were admitted and regretted by Sir Edward Grey, it is proposed to put other populations under Greek rule?

Mr. HARMSWORTH

The future of the populations now under Turkish rule is in the bands of the Peace Conference at Paris, who have not yet arrived at any final decision on the subject.

Lieut.-Colonel HERBERT

Will you take into consideration the past Government of the Greeks?

Mr. T. P. O'CONNOR

Has not M. Venezuelos, the Prime Minister of Greece, offered to place the investigation of the alleged massacres in the hands of a mixed Commission of English and Greek Commissioners?

Mr. HARMSWORTH

I think I may safely answer that in the affirmative.
