HC Deb 14 July 1919 vol 118 cc1-2
1. Sir J. D. REES

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether the Glas- gow and South-Western Railway Company still refuse to issue sleeping berth tickets to ladies; and, if so, what necessity exists for confining sleeping accommodation to men now that sick officers no longer need preferential treatment?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of TRADE (Mr. Bridge-man)

I am sending my hon. Friend a copy of a letter received from the railway company, in which they explain that it is not their practice to refuse sleeping accommodation to ladies when there are vacant sleeping berths at the time the application is made.

Sir J. D. REES

Is my hon. Friend aware that tickets are refused to women, or that preference is still given to men, and that the results are serious to delicate women who travel to Scotland by the Midland route?

Mr. A. RICHARDSON

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that I was refused a sleeping berth ticket for my wife by this company?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

I think it is not the practice of the company to refuse if there is accommodation; at any rate, that is my information.
