HC Deb 14 July 1919 vol 118 cc16-7
63. Mr. LEONARD LYLE

asked the Prime Minister whether, before definitely raising the price of coal by 6s. per ton, he will take evidence from the East End as to its serious effects on the poor, and on the local gas and electricity charges which also weigh heavily on the consumer?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

I have been asked to answer this question. My right hon. Friend has already indicated that the Government are gravely concerned with the seriousness of the effects of the proposed increase in the price of coal, but cannot hold out hope of an amendment of the Order which has been made until a reduction in the cost of production has rendered it possible to reduce the price of coal.

71. Mr. FOREMAN

asked the Prime Minister whether, in increasing the price of coal, he has taken into consideration the effect this step will have on the supply of cheap gas and light to the community?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

I have been asked to reply. The answer is in the affirmative.
