HC Deb 25 February 1919 vol 112 cc1583-4
56. Commander BELLAIRS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether His Majesty's Government, under the existing or prospective tariffs, are or will be in a position to take advantage of the new Brazilian preference which authorises a reduction of 20 per cent. in the import duties on goods from countries which make reciprocal customs concessions to Brazilian products?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of TRADE (Mr. Bridgeman)

My right hon. Friend has asked me to reply to this question. The preference to which the hon. and gallant Member refers is not a new one, but has formed part of the Brazilian Budget law for many years past. Despite repeated representations to the Brazilian Government, it has not hitherto been found possible to secure the extension of the reduced tariff rates to the United Kingdom. I am unable to say what may be possible in the event of His Majesty's Government effecting a change of policy in this country.
