HC Deb 18 December 1919 vol 123 cc660-1
115. Sir W. BULL

asked why it is that whilst every person is rationed to ½ lb. of sugar per week, the confectioners' shops are full of sweets and other condiments largely composed of sugar?

Mr. ROBERTS

It has not been considered advisable to prohibit or drastically to curtail the manufacture of confectionery, owing to the serious unemployment which would inevitably result. Such a measure would cause great distress amongst a class of people who would have difficulty in finding other means of earning a living, and have in many instances been encouraged to adopt this occupation in consequence of partial disablement.
