56. Lieut.-Colonel GUINNESSasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that a substantial reduction could be obtained in the railway deficit by returning to the pre-war system by which the Army, when not travelling on duty, paid the same railway fares as the general public instead of receiving their tickets for one-third of the usual rate under certain conditions as at present; and whether he will take the matter up with the Departments concerned?
§ The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of TRANSPORT (Mr. A. Neal)I have been asked to reply to this question, and, as my right hon. Friend the Minister of Transport stated in reply to the hon. and gallant Member on the 1st instant, he is endeavouring to obtain information which he hopes will be available before the Recess. I shall be glad if the hon. and gallant Member will repeat the question shortly before the Recess.
Lieut.-Colonel GUINNESSHas not the Chancellor of the Exchequer often invited suggestions towards national economy, and could he not take the matter up?
