HC Deb 01 December 1919 vol 122 c12
20. Mr. EDWARD WOOD

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that several highway surveyors of from fifteen to over twenty years' service under rural district councils in the West Riding of Yorkshire are likely to be displaced, without pension or other compensation, through the decision of the West Riding County Council to undertake the direct administration of the main roads of the county; and whether he can take any steps to ensure that suitable officials among those so displaced should receive first consideration in connection with any new appointments made by the West Riding County Council?

Sir E. GEDDES

I have no knowledge that any surveyors of rural district councils in the West Riding of Yorkshire will be displaced as suggested, and I am not in a position to deal with the last part of the question.

Sir S. HOARE

Will the right hon. Gentleman make inquiries, and if he finds that the facts are as stated, will he use his good offices in that direction?

Sir E. GEDDES

I have no power to take any action in the matter at all.

Sir S. HOARE

If the right hon. Gentleman has no power will he use his good offices?

Sir E. GEDDES

Certainly I shall be glad to take any action I can to prevent, these men being thrown out of employment, and when a case occurs I will make representations.
