HC Deb 01 December 1919 vol 122 cc40-1
77. Sir M. DOCKRELL

asked the Food Controller if he is aware that, owing to large arrivals at the ports, fish has recently been sold for manure; is this due to lack of rapid transport facilities to inland markets or is it due to control of fish dealers, who are being advised by him through the Press as to the steps which must be taken to obtain from the Food Ministry new certificates of registration before dealing wholesale in fish; and will he dispense with all harassing restrictions upon free trade in food?

Mr. McCURDY

The Food Controller is aware that a certain quantity of fish has recently been sold for manure owing to its bad condition on arrival at the inland markets, caused by delays in transit. I do not understand the second part of the question. It has been clearly announced in the Press that no new certificates of registration are required by wholesale dealers in fish already licensed, and facilities have been provided for the registration of all suitable persons not registered already.

Sir M. DOCKRELL.

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that the "Times" on 24th November stated—

Mr. SPEAKER

It is not in order to give quotations from newspapers.
