HC Deb 12 August 1919 vol 119 cc1090-1
50. Mr. MOSLEY

asked what percentage of men of military age employed by Government Departments have been replaced by ex-Service men since the Armistice?

The CHANCELLOR of the EX CHEQUER (Mr. Chamberlain)

Precise figures on this point are not available and could not be obtained without detailed inquiries from the various Departments. In general, however, the policy of His Majesty's Government has been to fill all suitable vacancies as they arose by the appointment of ex-Service men and in pursuance of this policy a substantial number of such men have been engaged since the Armistice. The further question of creating vacancies by the discharge of existing staff has been examined by the Committee appointed by the Minister of Labour. Their report is now receiving consideration.
