HC Deb 14 April 1919 vol 114 cc2508-9
102. Captain O'GRADY

asked the Postmaster-General whether two men in the Post Office at Leeds were recently promoted over a large number of their seniors, many of whom are on active service; whether their places on the seniority list were 35 and 33 respectively; whether many of the men passed over have a much wider experience and longer service than the men selected; whether many of the men with the forces have the highest qualifications; and whether he will call for the reports of the supervising officers, in order that he may satisfy himself that there was good ground on which to ignore the claims of the men overseas?

Mr. PEASE

Two sorting clerks and telegraphists at Leeds, ranking respectively 32nd and 51st on the class, were recently promoted to the class of overseers. They were selected because they were considered to be better qualified for advance ment than any of their colleagues. Full, consideration was given to the claims and qualifications of all the men passed over, including those serving with the forces, and I am satisfied that the selections made were in the best interests of the service. I have seen the reports of the supervising officers.
