HC Deb 14 April 1919 vol 114 c2506
94. Mr. CAREW

asked the President of the Local Government Board whether, to prevent unemployment and to provide for future requirements, he will now be able to issue definite orders to manufacturers of best quality bricks, who otherwise will have to close down for want of orders owing to the slackness in the building trade?

Mr. KELLAWAY

Orders have so far been placed for 815,000,000 bricks. Of these about 40,000,000 are superior bricks. Most varieties of best quality bricks are too expensive for use in public housing schemes. Makers of these higher-priced bricks are being encouraged to turn their attention to the manufacture of more ordinary and cheaper kinds.

Mr. REMER

Are there not certain brick works in the country capable of making bricks which are still being held by the War Office for ammunition dumps?

Mr. KELLAWAY

I know that they are being cleared as fast as possible.

Mr. K. JONES

When does the hon. Gentleman expect to have these millions of bricks?

Mr. KELLAWAY

The bricks are now ready for delivery as soon as they are required for use.

Mr. JONES

The whole number?

Mr. KELLAWAY

As many as are required are ready.

Sir F. BANBURY

Will they all be used at Slough?
