HC Deb 10 April 1919 vol 114 cc2204-5
32. Sir MONTAGUE BARLOW

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether it is proposed to appoint a Com- mission or Committee to inquire into the terms and conditions of industrial insurance; and whether, if so, he will undertake to see that there is some representative of the industrial insurance agents, on that body?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of TRADE (Mr. Bridgeman)

It has been decided to appoint a Committee to inquire into industrial assurance, but the terms of reference to the Committee have not yet been definitely settled. In reply to the concluding paragraph of the question, I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer which I gave on the 27th March to my right hon. Friend the Member for Aston.

35. Mr. STANTON

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will consider, seeing that the Government have decided to appoint a Committee of Inquiry into life assurance, direct representation of agents and collectors upon such Committee; and if he will advise that wide terms of reference, to include remuneration and conditions of service of agents and collectors, shall come within the scope of the inquiry and secure that agents and collectors shall give evidence for each life office and be permitted to cross-examine witnesses?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

In reply to the first part of this question, I would refer the hon. Member to the answer which I gave on the 27th March to the question of my right hon. Friend the Member for Aston. The terms of reference to the Committee to be appointed to inquire into industrial life assurance have not yet been definitely settled, but the question whether the scope of the inquiry should include the conditions of service of agents and collectors is receiving consideration. Applications have been received from some of the associations which represent insurance agents to be allowed to give evidence, and such applications will be submitted to the Committee when appointed.
