HC Deb 09 April 1919 vol 114 c2043
113. Mr. LYLE

asked whether, on the declaration of peace, alien enemy immigration into this country can, if not controlled, be at once resumed; and whether, under these circumstances, the Government will ensure the passage of the Aliens Restriction Bill at the earliest possible moment?

Mr. SHORTT

The powers under which the entrance of aliens into the United Kingdom has been controlled during the War are limited to times of war or of imminent national danger or great emergency. In the Aliens Restriction Bill I am asking for similar powers for use at any time during the next two years, and it is the intention of the Government to ensure the passage of that measure into law without any avoidable delay.
