HC Deb 03 April 1919 vol 114 cc1437-8
Sir DONALD MACLEAN

May I ask the Leader of the House if he can tell us what business is likely to be taken next week?

Mr. BONAR LAW

Yes; and I can give the business which we anticipate taking until the Easter Adjournment. On Monday, we shall take the Housing Bill— Second Reading.

Tuesday, continuation of Bill if it be desired, and the Ministry of Health Bill —Report stage.

Wednesday, Ministry of Health Bill—Report stage and Third Reading.

Thursday, Acquisition of Land Bill.

Monday (14th April), Land Settlement Bill, and if that be ended in one day, the Adjournment on Tuesday, 15th April. If not, the Adjournment will have to be postponed till Wednesday.

Sir J. HOPE

Will any time be given to the Scottish Housing Bill before Easter?

Mr. BONAR LAW

No; I see no prospect of taking before Easter anything beyond those Bills I have named.

Mr. DEVLIN

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that a promise has been made that the Irish Housing Bill would pass concurrently with the English Housing Bill?

Mr. BONAR LAW

It is introduced, and the fact that it does not have a Second Reading before Easter does not necessarily delay to any serious extent the final passage of the measure.

Sir D. MACLEAN

May I ask, in view of the very heavy programme the right hon. Gentleman has indicated, whether there is any possibility of concluding the Second Reading of the Housing Bill on Monday if we suspend the Eleven o'clock Rule? [HON. MEMBERS: "No!"] The two Land Bills which are set down to be taken before Easter are of immense importance, and I think it will be found that we have not got more than three Parliamentary days to discuss them.

Mr. BONAR LAW

I will be quite ready as far as the Government is concerned to consider that suggestion—[HON. MEMBERS: "No!"]—but I do not think it will be acceptable to the House. We must do our best to get through as much as we can before Easter.

Lieutenant-Colonel A. MURRAY

Will the Forestry Bill be introduced before Easter?

Mr. BONAR LAW

No.

Ordered, That the Civil Services Estimates, 1919–20, Class 2, Vote 35 (Chief Secretary for Ireland), be considered in Committee of Supply."—[Mr. Bonar Law.]
