HC Deb 31 October 1918 vol 110 c1604
49. Major NEWMAN

asked the Prime Minister whether the investment by the public in the various War Loans is being maintained at a satisfactory figure; and, if not, whether the Government have power under the Defence of the Realm Act to regulate or prohibit in the daily Press the growing number of advertisements of furs, diamonds, and such like articles of luxury which divert from investment in the War Loans the spare cash that is now so plentiful?

Mr. BALDWIN

I regret that the total subscriptions to War Bonds have not recently reached the total desired. I would once more lay stress on the vital importance, which is in no way diminished by recent events, of investing all available money in War Bonds. I am advised that the answer to the last part of the question is in the affirmative.

Major NEWMAN

Will the Government take the necessary powers under the Defence of the Realm Act?

Mr. BALDWIN

The question was whether the Government have power under the Defence of the Realm Act, and I am advised that they have the power, but I do not offer any opinion as to whether it is practicable or advisable to use those powers.
