HC Deb 31 October 1918 vol 110 cc1611-2
79. Mr. WATT

asked the Secretary to the Admiralty whether he is aware that a Glasgow firm is paying its workers for making gromets to his Department 6s. 8d. per 1,000, which enables expert needlewomen to make only about 10s. 8d. per week, while all other firms are paying 20s. per 1,000; if so, whether this lower wage has the sanction of his Department; and, if not, what steps he proposes to take to bring the wage up to a non-sweating level?

Dr. MACNAMARA

Nothing is known of the matter, but if my hon. and learned Friend will furnish particulars, inquiries shall be made.
