HC Deb 12 November 1918 vol 110 c2489
40. Lord H. CAVENDISH-BENTINCK

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the fact that the Regulation 40D is regarded as offensive by the female sex, is unjust between male and female and between female and female, and is moreover futile as a health measure, the Government will take steps to withdraw the Regulation?

Mr. BRACE

My right hon. Friend has asked me to reply. I cannot accept the hon. Member's statements, but a Committee is now inquiring into the working of the Regulation.

Mr. DILLON

Will not the right hon. Gentleman, in common justice, suspend the operation of this Regulation until the Committee reports, or until the House of Commons has had an opportunity of discussing the matter?

Lord H. CAVENDISH-BENTINCK

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this question will militate very largely against the success of the Prime Minister at the next election, unless he removes it?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

As this Committee has been sitting for several weeks, can the right hon. Gentleman say when it will report?

Mr. BRACE

I cannot say, but I will see if we can expedite the Report.

Mr. DILLON

Will the right hon. Gentleman answer my question: Will he suspend the operation of this Regulation pending the Report of the Committee, or an opportunity being afforded the House of giving a decision on the matter?

Mr. BRACE

No; I cannot promise what nay hon. Friend asks.
