§ 55. Mr. WILESasked the Prime Minister whether, having regard to the improved military situation, he will now consider the suspension of the calling up of men over forty-one years of age under the last Military Service Act so that the commerce and manufactures of the country may be carried on more efficiently?
§ The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of NATIONAL SERVICE (Mr. Beck)My right hon. Friend has asked me to reply. I am not in a position at the moment to add anything to the numerous answers which have lately been given on this subject, but the matter is engaging the urgent attention of the Government. I can assure my right hon. Friend, however, that the moment the military situation justifies a modification of the existing recruiting instructions the recruiting of the older men will be stopped.
§ Colonel ASHLEYIf the hon. Gentleman cannot do this with regard to the men over forty-one, will he do it with regard to the men over forty-five?
§ Mr. BECKI really think the House will see that it will be better for me not to add to the answer that I have given. We are most sympathetic towards this question.
