HC Deb 04 November 1918 vol 110 c1794
69. Mr. SHEEHY

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether police detectives in plain clothes may challenge and arrest men or women in the streets without showing badge or warrant; whether they can also enter houses and make searches without showing badge or warrant; and, if so, whether he proposes to take any action to secure protection, under these circumstances, for people from offensive action in the streets by men who are not detectives, and in their homes from robbery by men who are not detectives?

Mr. SHORTT

I am advised that it is not necessary for police detectives to carry a badge or warrant when making an arrest or search, but in view of the circumstances suggested in the third part of the question the police in Ireland are instructed to do so.
