Mr. HARRISasked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the French boot manufacturers are stated to be bringing pressure on the French Government to prohibit the importation of boots into France; and what action, if any, he is taking to protect the interests of British trade?
Sir A. STANLEYThe allegation referred to in the first part of the question had not previously been brought to my notice. I am not aware that any change is contemplated in the existing arrangements, under which boots manufactured in this country are freely imported into France under licence. My hon. Friend may rest assured that the interests of British trade in this connection will not be overlooked.
