HC Deb 07 March 1918 vol 103 cc2132-3
41. Mr. FIELD

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he is aware that dissatisfaction exists among English teachers on account of insufficient salaries; whether he can state how many resignations have been sent in during the last twelve months; and whether he can explain in what way the classes whose teachers have resigned are now taught?

Mr. FISHER

I have reason to believe that, with the help of the additional funds provided by Parliament, the grounds of dissatisfaction have been considerably diminished, though I cannot say that the remuneration of the teaching profession has yet been put on a satisfactory basis or that teachers in all areas and all schools are satisfied. I have no information as to the number of teachers who have resigned or as to the arrangements made for the particular classes affected by such resignations.

Mr. LYNCH

May I ask if this opportunity may be seized of raising the whole status of teachers in Great Britain, so as to give also a lead to Ireland?

Mr. FISHER

I very much hope that the opportunity will be given.
