HC Deb 26 June 1918 vol 107 cc1023-4
6. Mr. SHAW

asked the Secretary of State for India whether his attention has been called to the strength of the feeling expressed in India in favour of a waterways board to look after the interests of river transport in India; whether he is aware of the delay in dealing with this subject; and what action it is proposed to take?

Mr. MONTAGU

I have no information, but I will inquire of the Government of India what is the position.

Mr. FRANCE

Was the right hon. Gentleman's attention not called, when he was in India, to this important question of river transport in India?

Mr. MONTAGU

No, Sir.

Colonel YATE

Is it not the case that all the water transport on the Indus and other rivers was knocked on the head by the railways, and now that the railways are congested will the river flotillas be reconstituted?

Mr. MONTAGU

I will see that that suggestion is sent to India.
