HC Deb 26 June 1918 vol 107 c1038
74. Mr. WATT

asked the Minister of National Service whether his policy for the whole Kingdom is that stated in his letter of recent date to the tribunal of Wallasey, that no fit man of fighting age is to receive exemption unless he is engaged on work directly important to the prosecution of the War, and that there is a paramount necessity that an increased flow of men should be obtained without delay; and, if so, will he say what steps he has taken with other tribunals to enforce this view?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of NATIONAL SERVICE (Mr. Beck)

I think the hon. Member must be referring to a letter which was sent to all the National Service representatives, and which they were of course at liberty to communicate to their respective tribunals. That letter was to the effect stated in the question, and represents concisely the policy of this Ministry.

Mr. WATT

Am I to understand that men of fifty-one not engaged on work directly important to the prosecution of the War are to be taken by the hon. Gentleman's Department?

Mr. BECK

My hon. Friend's question was whether no fit man of fighting age is to receive exemption.
