HC Deb 26 June 1918 vol 107 c1027
14. Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he is aware that the recent increase of 4d. a day in the compensation allowance for officers and men who are compelled to live in lodgings while working in private shipyards does not meet the requirements of the men who are obliged to reside in Glasgow; and what steps it is proposed to take in the matter?

Dr. MACNAMARA

I imagine my hon. Friend is referring to the allowance in lieu of provisions which is made when officers and men are not victualled in kind. It was recently raised from 1s. 8d. to 2s. 1d. a day, after very full consideration of all the circumstances, and I am afraid it is not possible to differentiate, even if it were desirable, in favour of officers and men residing in particular localities.
