HC Deb 17 June 1918 vol 107 c15
39. Mr. MACMASTER

asked what provision has been made for the deliveries throughout the country of the sugar now required for the preserving of matured and maturing fruits, especially strawberries and gooseberries?

Mr. CLYNES

Vouchers have been issued to retailers by local food committees, and supplies to meet these have been allocated. In any case, where these special supplies have not yet reached the retailers, they have been authorised to meet the demands of private fruit growers, for the sugar allotted to them, from their ordinary stocks. In view of the disappointing prospects with regard to hard fruit the date at which the sugar allotted for the preservation of hard fruit will be available has been advanced to 1st July, in order that this sugar may be used partly for the later soft fruits, if the grower so desires.
