HC Deb 17 June 1918 vol 107 c37
73. Mr. ROWLANDS

asked the Undersecretary of State for War whether the German officers who escaped from the Water Lane Camp, Stratford, made a tunnel 40 feet long under the camp; how much time it is estimated these officers took to make the tunnel; what supervision there is over this camp; and is a thorough investigation being held into the conduct of the officials who are responsible for the security of these German prisoners?

Mr. MACPHERSON

The whole circumstances of these escapes will be thoroughly investigated by the Court of Inquiry which is being held.

Mr. ROWLANDS

Will the Court of Inquiry investigate the questions whether a periodical survey is made of this place, and what was the staff on duty at the time these prisoners escaped?

Mr. MACPHERSON

It will investigate all the relevant facts, but I will call the attention of the Court of Inquiry to the point just raised by my hon. Friend.
