43. Sir F.FLANNERYasked the Prime Minister whether his attention has been called to the increases of tithes, which in some cases amount to 8s. per acre, upon agricultural land; and whether it is the intention of the Government to assist the growth of food by early legislation consolidating the incidence of tithe and providing for its redemption upon terms equitable to all concerned?
§ The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of AGRICULTURE (Sir R. Winfrey)My right hon. Friend has asked me to answer this question. The position which has arisen in regard to tithe is well known to the Government, who have the question under consideration. I hope before very long to be able to announce their decision as to what, if any, legislation they deem necessary.
§ Colonel WEDGWOODWould it not be possible to repeal the Act which relieves owners of tithes who pay rates?
§ Sir R. WINFREYThat comes under the Agricultural Rates Act.
§ Mr. MORRELLCan the hon. Gentleman say whether a decision will be announced before the Debate in this House?
§ Sir R. WINFREYOh, yes; it will require legislation.
§ Mr. PRINGLECould it not be done on the Expiring Laws Continuance Bill?
§ Sir F. FLANNERYAre we to under stand that legislation will be introduced during the current Session?
