HC Deb 06 June 1918 vol 106 cc1737-8
33. Mr. BOWERMAN

asked the President of the Board of Trade the procedure to be observed by persons desirous of receiving special consideration in connection with the issuing of season tickets, and also to whom such application should be forwarded?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of TRADE (Mr. Wardle)

I would refer the right hon. Gentleman to the reply given on this subject yesterday to the hon. Member for the Romford Division. In cases in which a railway company consider that the issue or renewal of a season ticket is not justified, the railway company will report the matter to Mr. Honoratus Lloyd for his decision.

Mr. HARRIS

Can the hon. Gentleman say what course should be adopted by young persons who have to attend educational institutes in the country, and they require season tickets?

Mr. WARDLE

The same course that I have mentioned.

37. Mr. WILES

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether, having regard, to the fact that all railways are now financially under Government control, he will consider the fairness of granting traders' season tickets to firms or persons who pay sufficient carriage to obtain the privilege of a trader's ticket to one company, while finding it quicker and more convenient to travel by another company's line, although not paying to that company the minimum amount of carriage to secure it?

Mr. WARDLE

My right hon. Friend does not see his way to intervene in regard to the conditions under which traders' tickets are issued by railway companies.

Mr. WILES

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that although season tickets are granted to traders in respect of railway carriage, very often the mills are on one line, where they pay their carriage, say, to the North-Western, and the trader wants to travel to his place of business on another line? As the financial control is in the hands of the Board of Trade, cannot the hon. Gentleman see his way to allow a trader to have his ticket for any line, provided he pays the proper amount on one line?

Mr. WARDLE

That is the question on the Paper. If the right hon. Gentleman will send me the details I will make further inquiries.
