HC Deb 06 June 1918 vol 106 cc1732-3
22. Mr. ANDERSON

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether he has received complaints from Bermondsey as to the quality of meat supplied to that district; whether his attention has been drawn to the statement by the executive officer that the meat should have been condemned as unfit for food; and whether it is proposed to take any action in this matter?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of FOOD (Mr. Clynes)

The answer to the first two parts of the question is in the affirmative. I gather, however, that the beef was merely unpalatable, and not unfit for food. I can only repeat that every effort is being made to improve the quality of imported meat, and I am glad to say that the stocks of lower-grade imported meat are rapidly being exhausted, and that subsequent shipments are expected to show a much desired improvement.

Captain CARR-GOMM

Will the right hen. Gentleman make inquiries of the local food committee with a view to the serious complaints about these matters?

Mr. CLYNES

If the supplementary question relates to the subject of this particular question, I can make further inquiries.
