HC Deb 04 June 1918 vol 106 c1408
5. Captain Sir BEVILLE STANIER

asked the Under-Secretary for War by what Statute the requisitioning of wool not required for Government purposes, and therefore resold to the trade, has been authorised; whether, in the case of Colonial wool purchased by the War Office, a moiety of the profits on wool resold to the trade is returned to the Colonial growers; if so, whether a similar return will be made to wool growers in the British Isles; and, if not, will he say why this is not done?

Mr. FORSTER

The action of the Department is taken under the Defence of the Realm Acts. It is the intention that half of any profit realised by the sale of Dominion wool for civilian purposes shall be returned to the Dominion Governments. This and the price paid for the wool in the first instance are parts of the same bargain. In the arrangements relating to the home grower there is no profit-sharing element, but this has been borne in mind in fixing the prices paid to him.
