HC Deb 29 July 1918 vol 109 cc42-3
65. Colonel Lord HENRY CAVENDISH-BENTINCK

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether his attention has been drawn to a magazine called "The Month's Work," issued by the Ministry of Labour; how many public Departments are now issuing magazines or journals advertising the work of their Departments; what is the cost of these publications; and whether, in view of the shortage of paper, he will consider the desirability of discontinuing the issue of these periodicals?

Mr. BALDWIN

I have seen the magazine in question. I understand that five Departments issue publications of the kind referred to in the second part of the question at a gross cost of about £1,450 a month. To arrive at the net cost the amount derived from sales will have to be deducted. As at present advised, I am not prepared to issue instructions that these publications should be discontinued.

Mr. P. A. HARRIS

Could not private printing firms be obtained ready to publish these magazines without cost to the State?
