HC Deb 18 July 1918 vol 108 c1233
64. Mr. WATT

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether the curers of the Glasgow district were in any way consulted before the arrangements were made for issuing licences for the export of cured herrings to Allied countries; and is he aware that the lack of discrimination in price between Loch Fyne and other pickled herrings has led to neglect of the former with great injury to the trade?

Mr. PARKER (Lord of the Treasury)

The decision to release cured herrings under certain conditions for export under licence was taken without reference to the curers, either in Glasgow or elsewhere. It is clearly undesirable to encourage the curing of any herrings which can be put on home markets in a fresh or kippered condition, and the superiority of the Loch Fyne herrings ought to ensure a ready sale for these at home.
