HC Deb 11 July 1918 vol 108 c488
24. Colonel WEDGWOOD

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what rules have been followed as to the internment of German subjects in the following Colonies: British East Africa, German East Africa, German South-West Africa, Togoland, New Guinea, and Samoa; and whether he will call for a Report from each of these Colonies with a view to harmonising their treatment with that given to British civilians in Germany?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Mr. Hewins)

I assume that my hon. and gallant Friend is referring to European German subjects. As regards British East Africa, practically all of these subjects were removed to India for internment at the beginning of the War. The other places mentioned are occupied enemy territory, and the question of the treatment of the inhabitants of occupied territory is a general one, which affects the Allies as well as this country.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Will my hon. Friend inquire whether the treatment of German subjects in German East Africa is as he expressed it now?

Mr. HEWINS

I will look into it.
