HC Deb 29 January 1918 vol 101 cc1424-5
36. Mr. HOUSTON

asked whether the British steamer "War Thistle," of 5,166 tons gross register, is, or was, a standard ship; whether she has been sunk by the enemy; and, if so, on what date was she sunk and on what date was she reported as sunk?

Sir L. CHIOZZA MONEY

The "War Thistle" is a standard ship. She was torpedoed on the 17th of January, but my hon. Friend will, I am sure, be glad to learn that she has reached port. The last part of the question does not, therefore, arise. The number of standard ships sunk remains at one only.

Mr. PRINGLE

Can the hon. Gentleman say whether other ships bearing the name "war" have been sunk?

Sir L. CHIOZZA MONEY

Yes, but my hon. Friend should not conclude that vessels named in the "war" class are all standard ships. The two vessels which he has in mind were vessels built in the United States of America.
