HC Deb 29 January 1918 vol 101 c1415
15. Sir BERTRAM FALLE

asked the Under-Secretary for War if he is now in a position to make a statement as to permanently unfit and permanent base men in France and over the age of fifty and of fifty-five?

Mr. MACPHERSON

Instructions have been issued that men of this class in the Labour Corps who are over the age of fifty-five should be sent home, if they desire to return, for transfer to the home establishment. Those who are over fifty will be sent home for transfer to the home establishment as reinforcements are sent over to replace them.

Mr. WING

Is it on their own initiative or on the application of their own officers?

Mr. MACPHERSON

As I understand it, instructions have been issued to the various Commands in France to see that men who are over fifty-five shall be sent home at once. There is great difficulty, so far as the men who are between fifty and fifty-five are concerned. We can only replace these as we get men from home.
