HC Deb 17 January 1918 vol 101 cc497-8
89. Mr. WHITEHOUSE

asked the Postmaster-General whether during December he issued a new Order regulating the method of dealing with registered letters in the post; and whether the new method introduced is equally secure with the old method against loss of valuable postal matter?

The POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Mr. I Illingworth)

A method of checking registered letters, the principle of which has long been adopted in the larger offices in this country in respect of registered letters exchanged between officers working within them, was, on the 10th December, after a five months' trial as between certain selected offices, applied to registered letters sent from office to office in this country in registered letter bags. I understand the hon. Member's suggestion to be that the new system facilitates the theft of valuable articles from the post, and, if so, I am glad to have the opportunity of stating that there is no foundation for this suggestion.

Mr. KING

Has this change been welcomed, or on the contrary, by the postal employés?

Mr. ILLINGWORTH

That hardly arises out of the question, but if the hon. Member wishes to have the information I shall be very much obliged to him if he will put down a question.
