HC Deb 15 January 1918 vol 101 c139
4. Colonel YATE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether there are some 900 or 1,000 young officers in the reserve of Cavalry in this country who have never yet seen any service abroad; and, if so, whether steps will be taken to give these officers the opportunity of a turn of service at the front?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for WAR (Mr. Macpherson)

The number of young officers serving with Reserve Cavalry regiments at home, who have not been abroad, is about 250. Of these, about 100 are either under the age of nineteen, and so too young to be sent out or not yet fully trained. The remaining 150 will go out as and when vacancies occur in the mounted units abroad.

Mr. BILLING

Can the hon. Gentleman consider the advisability of giving these men an opportunity of transferring to the Air Service?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I understand that every application for transfer to the Air Service is considered.
